New Shipper Identification Requirements

Posted: November 26, 2009

Effective December 1, 2009 the Foreign Trade Regulations (FTR) has eliminated the use of Social Security Numbers (SSN) as an identification number for exporting of cargo. The only valid identification numbers for both individual exporters/shippers as well as businesses will be an Employer Identification number (EIN) or Dun and Bradstreet Number (DUNS) or a Foreign Passport Number.

EIN numbers are available to both businesses and individuals and can be obtained by registering with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) at:

http://www.irs.gov/businesses/small/article/0,,id=102767,00.html

Those wishing to obtain a DUNS number rather than an EIN for identification purposes, must first obtain an EIN from the IRS and apply to Dun & Bradstreet for a DUNS.
